The west end of 30A has lost its two biggest Gulf landmarks in less than a month, and neither has a return date. Vue on 30a closed for good in September. Topsail Hill Preserve State Park closed again after Hurricane Isaias. The places that reopened first were the casual oyster bars, pig roasts and fish camps clustered around County Road 393. For Dune Allen, Gulf Place and Blue Mountain Beach this fall, an evening by the water starts at that intersection.
The Storm Came Ashore About 15 Miles West
On the morning of Friday, Oct. 9, the National Hurricane Center's 10 a.m. advisory put Isaias at 120 mph, a Category 3. By the 10 p.m. advisory, the center was over the western Florida Panhandle with sustained winds of 90 mph. Local tracking placed landfall near Destin at about 8:30 that night. That is roughly 15 miles west of Dune Allen, which put 30A on the storm's stronger eastern side.
Grayton Beach took the most visible damage nearby. WJHG reported that surge topped the dunes there and filled Western Lake. The lake's flow reversed, and a neighbor's dock ended up about a quarter-mile down the shore.
Power came back faster. By Tuesday night, Oct. 13, CHELCO's outage map showed 607 of its 52,984 members still without power, about 1 percent. CHELCO is the utility that serves 30A. FPL showed 14 of 28,600 customers out in its part of the county.
Gulf Place Reopened by Sunday Night
The quick restoration showed on the west end's tables. Here is when neighborhood spots announced they were back, according to each business's own Instagram posts:
| Business | Area | Reopened |
|---|---|---|
| Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar | Gulf Place | Sun., Oct. 11, 11 a.m. |
| The Perfect Pig | Gulf Place | Sun., Oct. 11, 5 p.m., regular menu |
| Mimmo's 30A | Blue Mountain Beach | Sat., Oct. 10, carryout only at first |
| Stinky's Fish Camp and Stinky's Bait Shack | Dune Allen | Mon., Oct. 12, 4 p.m. |
| Cowgirl Kitchen | Blue Mountain Beach | Mon., Oct. 12 |
| Red Fish Taco | Blue Mountain Beach | Mon., Oct. 12, 4 p.m. |
| Blackbear Bread Co. | Blue Mountain Beach | Tues., Oct. 13 |
| AJ's | Grayton Beach | Mon., Oct. 12, limited menu |
| Hurricane Oyster Bar | Grayton Beach | Announced for Wed., Oct. 14 |
Shunk Gulley opened its doors about 38 hours after landfall. The Perfect Pig followed that evening with its full menu. Walmart at Dune Lakes, 6861 E US Hwy 98, and the South Walton Publix at 2038 US 98 were both open by the start of the week.
At Topsail Village, 5Tides at Topsail was open and taking bookings as of Monday, Oct. 12. Most of the everyday west end, from coffee and bread to tacos and oysters, was running before the first full workweek after the storm.
Vue Was Already Gone Before Isaias
The one Gulf-front dining room in Dune Allen built for anniversaries and rehearsal dinners was not part of that comeback. Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club, at 4801 W County Hwy 30A, announced on Sept. 14 that Vue on 30a had closed permanently. Routine maintenance had turned up water intrusion and indoor air quality problems in the building.
The property opened as the "Beach Club" in 1971 and later became Vue. Over the years, Visit South Walton named it "Best Fine Dining," and OpenTable listed it as a "Most Booked" restaurant.
The club's board said the problems could be fixed, but only with major investment and a long timeline. Vue's own closing notice explains that the building was "already slated for replacement under the Club's long-range beachfront master plan." The board decided not to spend that money "in a building with a limited future."
"Vue has been so much more than a restaurant. It has been part of the fabric of this Club and this community for generations," board president Steve O'Brien said in the statement reported by Get The Coast.
WJHG and the Northwest Florida Daily News covered the closure in mid-September. The closing notice gives no design or schedule for the replacement building. Dune Allen lost its special-occasion table nearly four weeks before the storm made landfall.
Topsail Hill's Gate Is Closed Again
Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, at 7525 W County Hwy 30A, is the other big west-end Gulf destination. In a normal season it is open from 8 a.m. to sunset every day of the year, with a $6 vehicle fee. Effective Oct. 13, Florida State Parks closed the park and its overnight accommodations because of Hurricane Isaias.
The park was already operating at partial capacity before the storm. Its main beach-access boardwalk had been closed for construction since Sept. 16, and visitors were using a designated path beside the tram station. Construction on a new Nature Walk and Visitor Center began on Jan. 27, 2025, which moved the tram stop and temporary restrooms to the left of the construction fence.
Grayton Beach State Park, a few miles east, moved faster. WJHG reported that surge had washed out the bridge into the park. Crews rebuilt it, and the park reopened on Monday, Oct. 12, while overnight stays stayed suspended. Topsail's notice gives no reopening date. Its page is the one to watch.
Where a Gulf Sunset Happens Now
With Vue and Topsail both offline, Gulf views on the west end come from a short list of places near the 393 intersection.
- Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar, 1875 S Hwy 393. The panoramic bar area looks out over the beach and hosts live music daily, according to Shunk Gulley's website. The adjacent Gulley Amphitheater hosts larger concerts. The posted fall calendar includes live music on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. Check Shunk Gulley's live music page for later dates.
- Shelby's Beach Bar & Grill, 37 Town Center Loop. It is part of the Perfect Pig restaurant family, and its covered patio overlooks the Ed Walline beach access and the Gulf. Shelby's did not appear among the early reopening announcements, so call before you go.
- Stinky's Bait Shack, 5960 W County Hwy 30A, next door to Stinky's Fish Camp. Visit South Walton describes the pair as sitting beside a coastal dune lake, across from a public beach access. The Bait Shack's frozen daiquiris are poured to go for sunset on the sand.
For a sit-down meal before sunset, The Perfect Pig at 7 Town Center Loop normally serves dinner from 5 to 9 p.m., seven days a week. Its posted schedule also includes a 3-to-5 p.m. bar menu.
Getting onto the beach takes one more check. Walton County's beaches and water have reopened, but some individual accesses may stay closed because of storm damage. The South Walton Fire District has warned that damaged flag poles and boardwalks could leave warning flags missing in places. It has also warned about nails and other debris in the sand, in parking areas and in the Gulf.
The free beach tram is the other way down to the sand. Its Dune Allen Local route runs from the 393 Beach Park and Ride to the Dune Allen and Fort Panic regional beach accesses every 30 minutes, and the 393 lot normally operates daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tram service to Topsail Hill runs only from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so the park's closure doesn't change the fall route. To confirm post-storm service, check the Beach Park & Ride section of the county's Hurricane Isaias recovery page for current service. The same page has a Beach Access Update section and a Multi-Use Path Updates section for the 30A bike path.
A Short List for This Week
- Debris. Walton County's storm debris pickup was set to begin Wednesday, Oct. 14. The county posted debris-separation guidance on Oct. 13. For questions, call the Community Information Center at 850-892-8394.
- Topsail Hill. The Florida State Parks Topsail page will post the reopening notice. When the park reopens, the main boardwalk will still be under construction.
- Reopenings. The table above reflects announcements through the evening of Oct. 13. Before driving over, check the business's own feed. This matters most for anyone who announced a limited menu or carryout-only service.
- Fall calendar. As of Oct. 13, the event listings still carried their original dates. The 30A BBQ Festival is on Friday, Nov. 6, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Grand Boulevard's North Lawn in Miramar Beach. The Cultural Arts Alliance's Flutterby Arts Festival runs Nov. 6 through 8, ending with a Sunday festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
